The portfolio of the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS Dresden (Fraunhofer-Institut für Werkstoff- und Strahltechnik IWS) includes two overlapping working areas: the laser and the surface technology. The development of technologies and systems with tailored laser light and the engineering of functional surfaces are both thrilling research areas with fantastic opportunities for the future.
The research and development work at the Fraunhofer IWS is based on a solid materials science background and extensive technical capabilities for materials and component characterization. Materials are a central key element of today’s manufacturing technology. On the other hand, the field of nanotechnology is increasingly gaining importance in both materials development and manufacturing. In both areas the Fraunhofer IWS Dresden has established and expanded its core competences.
The modern laser beam processes are broadly employed especially in industrial high volume manufacturing environments. Based on a comprehensive background in metal physical processes and system technologies we offer the development of laser welding, laser surface refinement and laser cutting technologies, prototype welds, processes and system optimizations. Frequently new system technology is required to fully exploit the technical and economical potential of new or further developed techniques in laser materials processing and more powerful and higher quality laser beam sources. That includes as well processing optics with enhanced functionality and hard- and software components for online process monitoring and control.
The interaction of laser beam welding with special system technologies e.g. optics for beam oscillation, temperature control units and seam tracking software provides new approaches for joining, hardening and cutting of hard-to-process materials such as hardenable and high strength steels, cast iron, aluminum and special alloys as well as parts of high stiffness. Typical application are found in automotive, energy supplying, heavy duty and railway industries and manufactures.
